The two-legged tanks, one located off Franz Road, near the Katy Police Station, and the other near the Katy Mills shopping centre, were both painted with almost identical designs. The major difference between the tanks is their size – the Franz Rd water tank can hold up to 250,000 gallons and the Katy Mills tank, with more legs and a larger diameter, can hold up to 500,000 gallons.
These iconic Geese Murals that adorn the City of Katy’s municipal water tanks will soon have a matching water tank on Franz Road. At Monday’s city council meeting, the council unanimously voted to approve the painting of a similar mural for the water tank located at 6801 Franz Rd.
Both water towers have the same images that include a flock of black and tan geese in flight against a light blue sky with the word “Katy” in a bright red font.
In 2018, the water tower won the “Water Tank of the Year” design contest from Tnemec, a company that sells water tank coatings throughout North America.
According to Kayce Reina, Director of Marketing and Tourism for the City of Katy, Goetzinger, who paints the murals with his brother, Peter Goetzinger and nephew, Orion Goetzinger, is one of the few artists in the country that can paint a mural on a 500,000-gallon water tank. The Goetzingers are based in Washington. “We’ve collaborated with this gentleman and his team before… and we are very pleased with their work, so we’re using the same people,” Reina explained.
Rolf and Peter Goetzinger hold firm that art created for spaces public and private should communicate specific ideas of place, purpose, and form. It is their endeavour to create art that appeals not only to the eye, but to the mind and spirit as well. Their passion for art has led them to discover many avenues of the creative process. Some places of their spectacular work include Libby's Water Tower in Sunnyvale, Silverdale Tank, Othello, and many more.
